Radar Made Simple for Cruisers by Commander T.L. Sparks, US Navy, Retired
Handbook for Starting the Dream, Volume IV, 1st Edition
Over the past few years of cruising, Terry has "run across a number of cruisers that take their lives and ours in their hands every time they go out. So far, those cruisers have been very lucky, and their luck has resulted in myths about the need for radar on cruising boats."
"This book will first address the myths and then explain how to stay smarter and safer with radar. Some of the myths that have developed and spread within the cruising community include:
- Radar is not necessary
- I have GPS and do not need radar
- I am traveleing with a group, and they will help me
- Automated Information System (AIS) took the place of radar
- It is not foggy in my area, so I do not need radar
- Radar is too hard to operate"
Commander Terry Sparks started his naval career as an electronics technician, repairing and operating communications and radar equipment. He has a BS in Electrical Engineering, as well as many years of technical training, including radar operation and maintenance.
His FCC license history includes General Class with Radar endorsement; Radio Operator's permit; and Amateur Extra Ham License. Terry and his wife Patricia retired in 2008 and are now cruising on their Irwin 43 MKIII somewhere in Mexico.
