While cruising on his sailing vessel Sunnyside, Terry kept running into sailors who had installed HF SSB radios, which they could not understand because their owners' manuals assumed significant knowledge. Terry's goal here is not to replace the ICOM manual but rather to aid cruisers in understanding their radios.
Terry's teaching experience taught him that what seemed simple to him wasn't clear to his students. He learned that when writing procedures, it's best to assume no knowledge by the end user. Commander Terry Sparks started his naval career as an electronics technician, repairing communications and radar equipment. On active Navy duty, he stood watches and repaired navigation, radar and sonar equipment aboard diesel and missile submarines. After leaving active duty, Terry returned to school and attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He was promoted to Ensign and ultimately retired as Commander.
His FCC license history includes 1st Class Radio Telephone with Radar endorsement (changed to a General Class Radio Telephone by the FCC); Radio Operator Permit; Ships License; and Amateur Extra Ham License. Terry and his wife Patricia retired in 2008 and are now cruising on their Irwin 43 MKIII somewhere in Mexico.
